A rapid and reproducible method for the determination of tannins in vegetable tanning baths is proposed as a modification of the BSA method for grain tannins existing in literature. The protein BSA was used instead of leather powder employed in the Filter Method, which is adopted in Italy and various others countries of Central Europe. In this rapid method the tannin contents is determined by means a spectrophotometric reading and not by means a gravimetric analysis of the Filter Method. The BSA method, which belongs to mixed methods (which use both precipitation and complexation of tannins), consists of selective precipitation of tannin from a solution containing also non tannins by BSA, the dissolution of precipitate and the quantification of free tannin amount by its complexation with Fe(III) in hydrochloric solutions. The absorbance values, read at 522 nm, have been expressed in terms of tannic acid concentration by using a calibration curve made with standard solutions of tannic acid; these have been correlated with the results obtained by using the Filter Method.
Serum levels of amylase, pancreatic isoamylase, lipase, trypsinogen, and elastase 1 were determined in 41 patients with pancreatic carcinoma and compared with those 71 patients with chronic pancreatitis and 17 patients with digestive non-pancreatic carcinoma, in an attempt to evaluate their relative values in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Trypsinogen and elastase 1 levels were the most frequently abnormal (56%), followed by pancreatic isoamylase (39%), lipase (34%), and amylase (27%). In 4 patients with resectable cancer levels of all serum enzymes were within normal limits, with the single exception of a low trypsinogen level in one patient. No significant differences in the behavior of serum enzymes were found between patients with pancreatic cancer and those with chronic pancreatitis or digestive non-pancreatic cancer. The results of our study indicate that measurement of serum pancreatic enzymes is of limited usefulness in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Primary gastrointestinal Lymphoma is a relatively infrequent tumor, who could be effectively treated with both surgery and chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The design of treatment depends on prognostic factors, namely stage and histologic grade. The most functional staging system seems that of Mushoff, while the recent concept of "Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue" has allowed to correlate the histologic grading with prognosis. Surgery is the most used therapeutic approach in IE and IIE stages, but both chemotherapy and radiotherapy or their combination seem to have similar activity. Adjuvant chemo- and/or radio-therapy after surgery increases survival compared to surgery alone. Chemotherapy is the treatment of choice in more advanced stages.
