[Humoral and cellular immunity and sepsis in intensive care (author's transl)].

Different parameters of humoral and cell mediated immunity were studied in 17 patients with sepsis. There is an important decrease of CH 50 (82 p. cent of patients) and variations of serum complement according with activation of alternative pathway in gram negative and gram positive septicemia. The cellular immunity is never normal: the stimulation index of lymphocyte proliferation under the influence of P. H. A. is lower than 3. There is less than 50 p. cent of T lymphocytes forming rosettes. With cure of sepsis a discrimination is observed between patients with transient decreased immunity and those with persistent lower responses.

The beta-glucuronidase release from macrophages activated by immune complexes of varying antigen/antibody ratio.

When unstimulated rat peritoneal macrophages are exposed in vitro to IC formed with BSA and specific rat anti-BSA IgG antibodies, an exocytosis of the lysosomal beta-G occurs. The maximal release of beta-G into the serum-free medium is induced, without cell lysis, by IC after a 6-h contact with the adherent cell population. This phenomenon is dose-dependent, and the percentage of beta-G in the medium is higher with IC in Ab excess than with other types of IC. In this homologous model (rat macrophages and rat antibodies) the Ag/Ab ratio of IC seems to represent an important factor of macrophage activation.

Characterization of allergens in Schistosoma mansoni, Fasciola hepatica and Echinococcus granulosus.

Various antigens interacting specifically with IgE antibodies from infected humans were identified in S. mansoni, F. hepatica and E. granulosus soluble extracts by means of radioimmunoelectrophoresis. Two allergens common to adult worm and cercariae were identified in S. mansoni extracts. They proved to be distinct from genus--or species--specific antigens previously identified in the parasite. In adult F. hepatica extract a species-specific antigen and another lipoprotein were shown to interact with IgE antibodies of patients with fasciolasis. Two major allergens were also found in whole fluid of sheep E. granulosus cysts. One of them corresponded to Echinococcus genus specific antigen. These results are discussed according to immunological findings in parasitic infections.
