Stability of ratings of words on concreteness, imagery, emotionality, and interest values.

We analyzed the stability of ratings on concreteness, imagery, emotionality, and interest values. 204 subjects were 92 adolescents (52 girls and 40 boys), whose mean age was 15.6 yr., and 112 young adults (80 women and 32 men) whose mean age was 19.8 yr. Subjects were given a list of 50 concrete and 50 abstract words to rate on concreteness, imagery, emotionality, and interest. On each scale for each age group Pearson correlations over words were significant.

Meaningfulness values of words: relation to concreteness, imagery, emotionality, and interest.

We estimated that, contrary to previous studies, there was a positive correlation between ratings of meaningfulness and of emotionality of words. The correlation was .36 between ratings of meaningfulness and emotionality obtained by Campos and González but .03 with ratings obtained in 1990 by Campos. Hypothesized positive correlations for ratings of meaningfulness with ratings of concreteness, imagery, and interest were significant.

Stability of emotionality scores.

We hypothesized the stability of scores on emotionality given by 111 young adults, whose mean age was 16.6 yr, 132 adults, whose mean age was 29.9 yr., and 48 older adults, whose mean age was 53.3 yr. Significant correlations were obtained between scores given to 210 words across age and sex groups. Pearson correlations were calculated over words and not over subjects. The correlations between scores of young people and adults were .90, between young and older people .80, and between adults and older people .87. Men's and women's scores correlated .89.

A cytochemical scanning electron microscopy study of non-specific acid esterase and acid phosphatase activities in human peripheral blood lymphocytes.

We analyzed the distribution patterns of nonspecific acid esterase and acid phosphatase activities with cytochemistry-scanning electron microscopy in backscattered and secondary electron imaging modes in isolated normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The analysis of non-specific acid esterase activity in the backscattered electron imaging mode showed, in some cells, focal distribution with a well-defined, homogenous deposit. Two patterns of acid phosphatase activity were evident with the backscattered electron imaging mode, i.e., focal and granular. Peripheral blood lymphocytes showing focal activity of both enzymes presented a smooth surface with few scattered microvilli as seen with the secondary electron imaging mode; while lymphocytes with a granular pattern of acid phosphatase activity had abundant microvilli. The correlation between patterns of enzymatic activity as seen in backscattering electron imaging mode, and surface morphological features as seen with secondary electron imaging mode, distinguished a subpopulation of lymphocytes of T lineage in human peripheral blood.

[Psychosocial functioning in adults with epilepsy].

The Washington Psychosocial Seizure Inventory (WPSI) was used in the assessment of psychosocial functioning of epileptic subjects in Chile. A total sample of 116 outpatients coming form an Epilepsy Program at a Public Health Service was evaluated. Disturbances in several areas relevant to psychosocial adjustment were noted. Their distribution was similar to that previously reported using the WPSI, although a greater severity of disturbances was noted. Peak score scales were financial status, emotional and interpersonal adjustment and overall psychosocial functioning. Rehabilitation measures could play a substantial role in the prevention and treatment of psychosocial disorders in epilepsy.

Distribution pattern of acid phosphatase activity in human peripheral blood leukocytes: a cytochemical scanning electron microscopy study.

The distribution patterns of acid phosphatase hydrolytic activity were studied in human peripheral blood cells with enzymocytochemical techniques together with light and scanning electron microscopy in the secondary and backscattered electron imaging modes. The acid phosphatase reaction product was seen in three different patterns of distribution: focal, granular and diffuse. These patterns were correlated with similar findings obtained with light microscopy. Acid phosphatase distribution patterns seen with SEM in the BEI mode were also correlated with the surface morphology of peripheral blood cells seen in the SEI mode. Cells exhibiting the focal pattern were smooth-surfaced with few microvilli; cells showing a granular pattern presented microvilli and microridges; ruffles were characteristic of cells with a diffuse pattern of activity. No reaction product was seen in cells bearing microvilli or ridges. Our findings demonstrate the correlation between acid phosphatase activity patterns and surface features in different subpopulations of peripheral blood cells.

Cloning and sequencing of two actin genes from Taenia solium (Cestoda).

Genomic and cDNA actin clones were isolated from Taenia solium gene libraries. The actin genes are interrupted by intervening sequences. Protein coding regions of both genes predict the same amino acid sequence. cDNA sequence data indicate that at least one gene is expressed at the larval stage. Results from Northern and Western blots showed that T. solium expresses an actin transcript of about 1,400 bases and a protein of 45,000 Da.

Scaffold-like structures in mouse chromosomes revealed by restriction endonuclease digestion and electron microscopy.

A scaffold-like structure is observed under the electron microscope when mouse chromosomes are digested with the restriction endonuclease Hae III. This structure, located in the inner part of chromatids, may correspond to those fragments of chromatin loops anchored to the chromosome scaffold and is obtained when chromosomes are treated either in suspension or attached to grids. The width of the structure is correlated with the extent of digestion in chromosomes treated in suspension. Those treated on grids show this structure whenever chromatids do not collapse. These results agree with the model of chromosome organization based on a non-histone protein scaffold.

Differential action of restriction endonucleases on chromosomes prepared for light and electron microscopy.

Whole mounted chromosomes from the L929 mouse cell line were digested on grids with HinfI and AluI restriction endonucleases and studied by electron microscopy. Results show differences in the pattern of bands obtained in a marker chromosome when compared with those previously reported by light microscopy with the same restriction endonucleases. These differences suggest that the accessibility of restriction sites on chromosomes may be modulated by preparatory methods for chromosome analysis.

New fatty monoesters of erythromycin A.

New fatty polyenic (linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic, linoelaidic) mono esters of erythromycin A have been synthesized by using various reagents such as acyl chloride, carboxylic acid anhydride, and mixed carbonic anhydride. These different ways of activating the fatty acid allowed a regioselectivity of esterification at position 2' of the desosamine ring or position 4" of the cladinose ring of erythromycin A. The in vitro antibacterial properties of these new esters against members of the resident flora of the human skin were determined and compared with those of erythromycin A. The number and the stereochemistry of the double bonds seem to play a crucial role in the expression of the in vitro antibacterial activity.
