Identification and quantitative analysis of the volatile substances emitted by maturing cotton in the field.

When atmosphere from cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum L., var. Deltapine Smoothleaf) was condensed by passing it over the expansion coil of an air conditioner and three 1-hour collections per day (early morning, noon, and late afternoon) were made, the total essential oils were found to consist of 50 to 60% beta-bisabolol (I(k) 1660) and gamma-bisabolene (I(k) 1550) and 30 to 40% geraniol (I(k) 1250), myrtenal (I(k) 1328), nerolidol (I(k) 1520), and beta-caryophyllene oxide (I(k) 1590). As the plant matured, trans-2-hexanol was produced in concentrations of 7 to 27%. Before fruiting, beta-bisabolol made up as much as 60% of the total essential oil transpired by the plants, and as the concentration of beta-bisabolol increased, that of gamma-bisabolene decreased.

Transvenous coronary angiography in dogs using synchrotron radiation.

The application of coronary angiography is limited because it requires arterial invasion and the direct injection of contrast agent into the coronary arteries. A prototype system has been developed which achieves sufficient sensitivity to the iodinated contrast agent to allow the visualization of coronary arteries in dogs after its intravenous injection. The system uses two fan beams of x-rays from an electron storage ring and a 300 element linear silicon detector. Two interlaced images, spaced at 150 eV above and below the K absorption edge of iodine (33.2 keV), are acquired and the logarithmic subtraction of these two images produces an image which has maximal sensitivity to iodine and minimal sensitivity to soft tissue and bone. This approach appears suitable for studies on human subjects.

Sexual protective strategies of late adolescent females: more than just condoms.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the sexual protective strategies of late adolescent heterosexual women. DESIGN: Open-ended questioning regarding sexual protective strategies was included in a larger cross-sectional survey on sexual risk. Participants' responses were recorded verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. PARTICIPANTS: 234 African American, Hispanic/ Latina, and non-Hispanic white 19- to 21-year-old females were recruited from the driver's license records of a mid-Atlantic state. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants responded to the open-ended question, "How or what do you do to reduce your risk for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV?" RESULTS: Seven primary sexual protective strategies were identified from participants' responses: using condoms, abstaining or postponing sexual intercourse, getting tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), selecting safe partners, negotiating condom use, talking about sexual risk histories, and limiting the number of sexual partners. CONCLUSIONS: Some of the sexual protective strategies identified by study participants were less than effective and left young women vulnerable to infection with HIV and STDs. In addition, the use of these alternative strategies may leave young women feeling less at risk and thus less likely to use other more effective strategies such as condoms. The implications for nursing practice and the assessment of the sexual protective strategies of young heterosexual women are discussed.

Ventricular aneurysms in chronic Chagas' cardiopathy.

Ventricular aneurysms in Chagas' disease is the most frequent pathologic finding of this condition. It is possible to diagnose this lesion during early stages by means of cineventriculography, or echocardiography in B mode. An early diagnosis is mandatory for those cases in which the most important clinical manifestation is the presence of frequent ventricular arrhythmias which are often refractory to many forms of treatments. Consequently cardiac surgery is a useful and promising means for the effective treatment of this form of Chagas' disease. Three clinically illustrative cases are presented and the pathophysiology of these lesions is reviewed.
