Effect of sulpiride on ischemia- and reperfusion-induced heart damage, in rats.

In an experimental model of heart ischemia, obtained in anesthetized rats with the permanent ligature of the left anterior descending coronary artery, the intravenous (iv) injection of I-sulpiride (6-25 micrograms/kg) dose-dependently reduced the lethality rate, the incidence and severity of ventricular dysrhythmias and infarct size during the early phase of ischemia (first 30 min after coronary ligation). Lethality and there incidence and duration of ventricular dysrhythmias were also significantly reduced by the same IV doses of I-sulpiride in a model of coronary reperfusion. These results show that a specific dopamine antagonist is able to limit ischemia- and reperfusion-induced myocardial damage and suggest that endogenous dopamine may exert a deleterious effect in such conditions.

Hemangioma of the hand.

The authors describe the anatomopathological and clinical findings of 24 cases of benign hemangioma of the hand. The instrumental methods used to diagnose hemangioma are discussed, and MRI imaging is given particular importance in the preoperative evaluation of the site, size, extent, and relationship with the surrounding tissues and any multiple locations of the vascular tumor. This evaluation is essential to perform a wide resection of the tumor, which is the only means of avoiding recurrence. After an average follow-up of 33 months (14-54) recurrence was observed in 7% of the cases treated.

[Synovial lumbar cyst].

The Authors report a case of low back pain with sciatica due to a synovial cyst of the interapophyseal joint of the lumbar spine. The diagnosis was made by CT and MRI. A review of the literature confirms the relative rarity of their lesion at the lumbar level and the necessity of radical surgery, best achieved with microsurgical technique. The Authors emphasize the importance of accurate diagnosis before surgery.

Back Pain↗

Hepatic histological lesions during acute experimental peritonitis in the rat.

During acute experimental peritonitis in the rat, the main histological lesions in the liver are represented by venous stasis in the central lobular vein and in the sinusoids; by glycogen mobilization and intracytoplasmic accumulation of triglycerides in the hepatocytes; by activation and hypertrophy of Kupffer's cells.

Acute Disease↗

Giant cell tumor of the hamate bone.

The authors present two cases of giant cell tumor of the hamate bone. The symptoms and signs were similar in both cases: pain, mild inflammatory changes, and localized swelling. The radiographic picture included lacunar osteolysis with interruption of the cortex in one case, intact cortex but more expansive lysis of the cancellous bone in the other. The findings of greatest interest were constituted by the extreme rareness of the localization, problems related to differential diagnosis, long-term follow-up in one case (20 years) and the different methods of treatment used.

Experimental acute renal congestion in rat: histological observations.

An experimental model of acute and total venous stasis has been realized in kidney of rat by division of the renal vein. Different grades of histological damage have been observed, from initial interstitial edema with only degenerative changes in tubular epithelium to its final necrosis. On the contrary glomeruli appear less involved.

[Cerebral tuberculoma. Clinical case].

The authors report of a patients operated for a double encephalic mass in the left posterior parietal region. This lesion resulted a tubercoloma at a later investigation. This pathology is relatively common in underdeveloped countries, declining in western countries. The authors emphasize the need of a careful evaluation in searching tuberculous infection in presence of encephalic granulomatous masses.

Brain Diseases↗

Experimental congestive splenomegaly: histological observations in the rat.

In course of experimental pre-hepatic portal hypertension in the rat, the most important histological alterations in the spleen, are represented by pooling of blood in the red pulp, activation of the macrophagic system, with hyperplasia of the histiocytes, increase of reticular fibers and of subcapsular myo-fibroblasts, and finally by evolution towards a diffuse fibrosis all over the parenchyma.
