[A model for ethical decision-making in nursing].

Although various models of ethical decision-making in nursing have been developed, these models only identify the steps for ethical decision-making but describe no framework within which the decisions must be made. This model for ethical decision-making in nursing describes the practice of the nurse/midwife, steps for ethical decision-making as well as the framework for ethical decision-making. This model can be used as a guideline facilitating ethical decision-making which can be justified and explained.

[Independent practice?].

The concept of the nurse as an independent practitioner may be ambiguous and misleading. Even in recent nursing publications the concepts of dependence, interdependence and independence were used to describe the practice of the nurse. This however is not logical or justifiable. The aim of this article is to describe the nurse as an independent practitioner who functions as a member of the health team within the legal-ethical framework of nursing.

[A model for qualitative research in nursing].

The aim of the research is to describe a model for research in Nursing from the Model of Botes (1989). Within a contextual, qualitative, descriptive design a model for research in Nursing is described through a literature study, script- analysis and intersubjective debate. The method of research went through five phases. The model for research in Nursing is described accordingly the assumptions of the model, a visual presentation, definition of the central concept and statements in the model. The model is evaluated and recommendations for implementation are given.

[A functional approach in nursing].

The aim of the functional approach is the application of knowledge to the solution of problems in nursing practice. In order to decide whether the functional approach is appropriate in nursing science it is necessary to study the relationship between nursing practice, nursing science and the philosophy of nursing science. If the functional approach seems appropriate, thought should be given to methodological implications for nursing research.

[The relationship between nursing practice, nursing, and nursing philosophy].

The activities of the three dimensions of nursing does not occur in isolation. Nursing practice, the field of study of nursing science, has characteristics which influence the scientific practice of nursing. Nursing practice is constituted by the nurse practitioner as a result of the fact that the pre-scientific interpretations of the nurse give form (gestalte) to nursing interactions. From a functional perception in nursing science, the scientific practitioner must take cognisance of the pre-scientific interpretations. Besides the empirical reality, specific values and assumptions form an integral part of this practice of science in Nursing. The third dimension, the philosophy of nursing brings greater clarity in that the activities of the first two dimensions can be organised, analysed and evaluated.

[The use of the Swedish scale in the selection of nursing students at the Rand African University].

Students applying to follow the B. Cur. degree at the Rand Afrikaans University are subjected to a selection process. In spite of the selection process the drop-out rate is high. An attempt is being made to evaluate the present academic selection process. The amended Smeltzer method is used as a point of departure to correlate with the model proposed by the University administration. The academic predictions are implemented on the Swedish formula and a cut-off point is obtained according to a sliding scale proposed for academic selection. With the abovementioned two methods it appears that the selected population has the most successful academic results if the cut-off point of the amended Smeltzer method and the Swedish formula is 60 and 15 respectively.

Phase II of a successful university-based in vitro fertilisation programme. Changes incorporated.

the ultimate goal of any clinical programme treating infertility by means of in vitro fertilisation and embryo replacement is to maximise the number of patients who become pregnant in a treatment cycle. A 12% pregnancy rate was previously reported from this unit. Following the instigation of changes and further modifications, an overall success rate of 27% per patient was obtained in phase II. The reasons for this improved success are hard to pinpoint, but experience and changes in methodology probably play a role. These changes are described and the results discussed.

Crural hypertrophy associated with centronuclear myopathy.

A case of centronuclear myopathy of adult onset with striking hypertrophy of lower limb muscles in a black South African man is described with details of the light microscopic, histochemical, and ultrastructural features. The association of hypertrophied muscles with centronuclear myopathy has not to our knowledge been reported previously and it is felt that this may be a variant of the condition.
