Effect of lipoxygenase and cyclo-oxygenase inhibition on oleic acid-induced lung oedema.

The contribution of cyclo-oxygenase and 5-lipoxygenase metabolites on hemodynamics and oedema formation was investigated in 21 isolated rabbit lungs after a 10 min Oleic Acid (OA) infusion, by recording the changes on Fluid Filtration Rate (FFR) and Pulmonary Artery Pressure (PAP). Lungs (n = 7) were pre-treated with indomethacin (cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor) 50 min prior to OA or with Diethylcarbamazine (5-lipoxygenase inhibitor) (n = 7) or not pre-treated at all (control group, n = 7). The FFR in the indomethacin group was significantly greater than in the control and Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) groups 12 min after OA (7.6 +/- 2.3 mg.min-1 vs. 2.3 +/- 0.8 mg.min-1 and 0.96 +/- 0.8 mg.min-1 respectively) (P < 0.01). The FFR in the control lungs 20 min after OA was significantly greater than the corresponding DEC value (4.2 +/- 0.5 mg.min-1 vs. 1.6 +/- 1.0 mg.min-1) (P < 0.01). Mean Pulmonary Artery Pressure (MPAP) increased both in control and indomethacin groups (16.0 +/- 2.0 Torr to 24.3 +/- 3.7 Torr after 20 min OA and 14.4 +/- 2.5 Torr to 24.6 +/- 3.6 Torr at 10 min after OA, respectively), but MPAP value in DEC group did not significantly change 30 min after OA (14.7 +/- 1.5 Torr to 16.0 +/- 2.3 Torr) (P > 0.05). So we conclude that the selective inhibition of the 5-lipoxygenase metabolites (leukotriene-5hete) may play a protective role in OA induced oedema, whereas the selective inhibition of the cyclo-oxygenase pathway may have a deleterious effect on the hemodynamics and endothelial permeability in our experimental condition.

[Paradoxical systemic emboli. 5 case reports].

Paradoxical systemic embolism by venous emboli in the arterial circulation can be explained by a right-left shunt. In 5 patients, the diagnosis of paradoxical emboli was definite in three cases, and suspected in two others. Venous, arterial and cardiac angiography define the anatomical criteria which alone can confirm the diagnosis. The introduction of a caval filter can prevent recurrent emboli which has a serious prognosis.

[The use of labelled albumin microspheres in the study of arteriovenous shunting in varicosities of the lower limbs (author's transl)].

The greater proportion of oxygen in the blood circulating in veins of the lower limbs bought to attention the possibility of pre-capillary arteriovenous shunting. The intra-arteriel injection of Technetium labelled serum albumin microspheres enables one to quantify arteriovenous shunts greater than 25 microns. The authors made a comparative study of arterio-venous shunting by blood gases analysis and isotopic techniques in twenty patients. The results seem to deny the existence of arteriovenous shunts in the genesis of essential varicose veins in the lower limb.

[Peroperative sinus arrest in a patient with sick sinus syndrome (apropos of a case)].

A sinus arrest occured during a surgical intervention in a patient suffering from a sinus nodal dysfunction. The Fentanyl acetate used as an analgésic, seems to have played an important role in the genesis of the accident, depressing sinusal and junctional automatisms. Though unusual, this complication leads to a further investigation in preoperative period for a possible sinus nodal dysfunction in order to anticipate an extreme preoperative bradycardia (sino atrial block) treated with intravenous administration of isoprenaline. Intraveinous atropine test is a simple preoperative technique of research in front all unexplained sinus bradycardia.

Karyotype identity of two subspecies of Eld's deer [Cervus eldi (Cervinae, Artiodactyla)] and its consequences for conservation.

Among the three subspecies generally recognized within the Eld's deer (Cervus eldi)--C. e. eldi, C. e. thamin, and C. e. siamensis--C. e. siamensis is considered to be particularly endangered following its disappearance from a major portion of its original range. The only captive breeding population of this subspecies is in the zoological parks at the Paris Museum of Natural History. Taking into account its low effective population size (Ne = 7) and the increasing levels of inbreeding, the continued breeding of this "micropopulation" in isolation from closely related subspecies and in particular from C. e. thamin, which is much more common in zoos as well as in the nature, is questioned. As an initial step in determining if crosses between these subspecies could be performed without risk of outbreeding depression due, in part, to gross differences in their karyotypes, a comparative chromosome banding analysis (RBG-bands) of C. e. siamensis and C. e. thamin was undertaken. No chromosomal differences were identified between the taxa at the level of resolution obtained. The study suggests that, at least from a karyotypic perspective, no obvious differences delimit the two subspecies, and hybridization between endangered C. e. siamensis and C. e. thamin is not likely to lead to impaired fertility in hybrid animals.

Microsatellite analysis of genetic diversity of the Vietnamese sika deer (Cervus nippon pseudaxis).

The Vietnamese sika deer (Cervus nippon pseudaxis) is an endangered subspecies of economic and traditional value in Vietnam. Most living individuals are held in traditional farms in central Vietnam, others being found in zoos around the world. Here we study the neutral genetic diversity and population structure of this subspecies using nine microsatellite loci in order to evaluate the consequences of the limited number of individuals from which this population was initiated and of the breeding practices (i.e., possible inbreeding). Two hundred individuals were sampled from several villages. Our data show both evidence for limited local inbreeding and isolation by distance with a mean F(ST) value of 0.02 between villages. This suggests that exchange of animals occurs at a local scale, at a rate such that highly inbred mating is avoided. However, the genetic diversity, with an expected heterozygosity (H(e)) of 0.60 and mean number of alleles (k) of 5.7, was not significantly larger than that estimated from zoo populations of much smaller census size (17 animals sampled; H(e) = 0.65, k = 4.11). Our results also suggest that the Vietnamese population might have experienced a slight bottleneck. However, this population is sufficiently variable to constitute a source of individuals for reintroduction in the wild in Vietnam.
