It is the aim of this work to present a simple method to assess the surgery used for facial aging (face-neck lift), based on a digital computerized analysis of images, and to include an evaluation of the results obtained from its use on 685 cases of face lift, which our team resolved from January of 1990 to December of 1997. To this end, we reviewed 4110 preoperative and postoperative slides of these patients and processed them using a computer, obtaining the results presented herein. It is worthy of note that in this new method of analysis that we have used, data, measurements, or aspects of facial aging have revealed the most homogeneity and reliability when comparing the results obtained with the reality observed by both the surgeon and the patient. Likewise, we rejected other analyzed data, as they gave different or unreal results when compared with the reality.
Six strains isolated from the intestines of juvenile turbot in a fish hatchery in the north of Spain were found to be phenotypically members of the genus Vibrio. However, the phenotypic traits of these organisms did not place them in any of the currently known Vibrio species. These isolates formed an homogeneous group in which the DNA-DNA similarity values (the differences between the thermal denaturation midpoints of the homologous and heterologous duplexes) with reference strain A089T (T = type strain) ranged from 0 to 1.7 degrees C. The results of a 16S rRNA sequence analysis of A089T placed this strain in the genus Vibrio in the gamma subclass of the Proteobacteria. The closest relative is Vibrio aestuarianus, with a sequence similarity of 97.8%. This group of strains can be easily differentiated from the other Vibrio species by their clear phenotype. We propose the name Vibrio scophthalmi sp. nov. for these strains; the type strain is strain A089 (= CECT 4638).
The outer membranes of the 10 serovars of Vibrio anguillarum showed a common major protein with a size of around 40 kDa. Antibodies against the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) of V. anguillarum AO18 (serovar O1) cross-reacted with the MOMPs of all the other serovars but not with the outer membrane proteins of Escherichia coli. The MOMP of V. anguillarum serovar O1 was isolated, reconstituted to two-dimensional crystals, and structurally characterized by electron microscopy and image processing. The unit cell structure of the crystalline MOMP, as well as the secondary structure composition of the protein with a high amount of beta-structure, is strongly reminiscent of that of bacterial porins. The functional properties of the pores were investigated by conductance measurements with the MOMP reconstituted in planar lipid membranes. The V. anguillarum MOMP is characterized by a relatively weak cation selectivity and a moderate surface charge, and it shows voltage-dependent conductance effects. The MOMP is functionally similar to OmpF from E. coli, and it can be classified as a general diffusion porin.
OBJECTIVE: The study examined whether employing mental health consumers as peer specialists in an intensive case management program can enhance outcomes for clients with serious mental illness. METHODS: A quasiexperimental, longitudinal, nonequivalent control group design was used to compare outcomes of clients assigned to three case management conditions: teams of case managers plus peer specialists, teams of case managers plus nonconsumer assistants, and case managers only. Outcomes were measured at baseline and at three six-month intervals. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to assess between-group differences. RESULTS: Complete data were available for 104 clients. Compared with clients in the other two groups, clients served by teams with peer specialists demonstrated greater gains in several areas of quality of life and overall reduction in the number of major life problems experienced. They also reported more frequent contact with their case managers and the largest gains of all three groups in the areas of self-image and outlook and social support. No differences in outcomes were found between clients served by teams with nonconsumer assistants and those served by case managers only. CONCLUSIONS: Integration of peer specialists into intensive case management programs appears to lead to enhanced quality of life for clients and more effective case management.
Broiler chicks at 2 wk of age were fed the following fats and oils at 4% in a corn-wheat-soybean basal diet: palm oil (PO); tallow (T1 and T2); tallow + soybean oil (50:50, TSO); tallow+acidulated soybean oil soapstock (50:50, TASO); soybean oil (SO); and linseed oil (LO). All of these, with the exception of T1, contained 5% soybean lecithin. The apparent fat availability (AFA) and AME of added fats ranged from 78.8 to 96.0% and from 7.32 to 8.95 kcal/g, respectively. Three fat sources (TSO, SO, and LO) resulted in the highest values for these two measurements, whereas PO, T1, T2, and TASO showed the lowest values. There was no difference for AME of diets among fat-supplemented treatments, regardless of the difference in the nutritive values of the fats and oils tested. The apparent availability of each fatty acid (AAFA) for C16:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, and C18:3 was calculated from the analysis of the diets and excreta collected over a 4-d period. The results of the present study indicated that 2-wk-old chicks utilize TSO, SO, and LO more efficiently than PO, T1, T2, and TASO.
In treating facial aging there are three areas that need to be corrected from a deep to a superficial plane. Thus, different techniques need to be used. In this article we describe our experience in correcting these three areas and a possible solution: the three flaps of the SMAS.
Usually in subcutaneous or muscular rejuvenation techniques, work is concentrated on the lateral regions of the face and particularly on the cheek and cervical area. However, results are poor in the temporoparietal area and are virtually nonexistent in the frontonasal area. By making a coronal incision and extending it into the preauricular area followed by a subperiosteal approach so as to free the frontonasal, orbital rim, and zygomaticomalar areas, we can completely mobilize the upper half of the face thus improving it aesthetically.
This paper presents a series of 54 consecutive cases of vertical mastoplasty carried out over the period February 1994 to April 1995. In 30 cases breast reduction was performed, in 19 pure mastopexy, and in the remaining 5, a mastopexy-breast augmentation with a silicon gel prosthesis was carried out. The parameters used for analyzing the persistence of vertical scarring were: inframammary cutaneous folds, wrinkling of the skin, and puckering at 1, 3, and 6 months during the postoperative period. An attempt has been made to establish how the vertical scar has evolved over this period. The study done by age groups as well as the study of the breast's cutaneo-glandular characteristics provides data as to with which morphotype and worst results were obtained.
This paper shows how one of the flaps of the SMAS, which is normally eliminated during a facelift as excess tissue, can be folded up and used to improve the projection of cheekbone. The improvement of the projection of this facial area enhances the aesthetic result, when the desired aesthetic result is discreet, in rhytidectomy without having to resort to biomedical material or complex surgical techniques. Our technique, which is safe and easy to handle, simplifies this procedure, providing a long-lasting satisfactory result for both the patient and the surgeon. Our report was done following rhytidectomy on 126 female patients and after an approximately 3-year follow-up.
