[Epidemiology of symptomatic infections of the urinary tract in the first two years of life].

The incidence of symptomatic Urinary Tract Infection (U.T.I.) in 2980 children aged under 2 years was valued. The study was performed in the Pediatric Clinic of Palermo between January 1988 and December 1989 involving a number of out paediatricians. The U.T.I. incidence was found to be 3.38%, with a higher frequency in males (4.7%) than in females (2.03%). Urinary tract malformations was diagnosed in 60% of patients with U.T.I. echographically and radiographically examined.

[Palmar dermatoglyphics. Analysis carried out on 315 subjects of western Sicily].

The study of dermatoglyphics is one of particular diagnostic interest in many diseases, especially in the identification of some chromosomal aberration syndromes. The frequent occurrence for observation of this pathology and the need for comparison of the relevant dermatoglyphics with those of an adequate control group, caused us to carry a dermatoglyphic analysis of our population. We examined 315 normal subjects (147 males and 168 females) of Western Sicily.

The nightly spontaneous alkalinization of the stomach.

Authors evaluated eighty-four 24-hour intragastric pH recordings of 73 subjects in different pathophysiologic conditions. Among them there were 12 healthy subjects, 27 duodenal ulcer patients, 10 of whom were examined both before and after treatment with H2 receptor antagonists, 18 gastro-esophageal refluxers and 16 other patients who complained of dyspepsia of various origins. Authors observed a spontaneous nocturnal alkalinization phenomenon of the stomach (SNA) which began in the latter part of the night; its onset was strongly related with sleeping and interrupted by waking up. This phenomenon was absent in duodenal ulcer patients but could be restored by treatment with anti-H2 drugs. The authors, moreover, gave evidences of a relation between SNA and the vagal integrity and modulation of the gastric secretions.

[Blood tumor markers in patients with lung cancer].

Over the past years, a number of serum components have been confirmed as useful biological markers of lung cancer. Although none have been sensitive or specific enough to enable early diagnosis, they do seem to facilitate the monitoring and prediction of disease prognosis. We studied tumor markers in 66 patients with lung cancer: serum levels of ferritin, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), alpha-fetoprotein (alpha-FP); tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA), cytocheratin fragment 19, 21-1 (CYFRA 21-1) and carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA 125) levels were measured and correlated to tumor stage and histological type. Postulating a specificity of 95% versus benign diseases of the lung, we confirmed the following diagnostic sensitivity for the markers: ferritin = 39.3%; CEA = 42.4%; alpha-FP = 5.1%; TPA = 57.5%; CYFRA 21-1 = 65.1%; CA 125 = 46.9%. CYFRA 21-1 showed significantly higher sensitivity in non small cell lung cancer patients than in those with small cell lung cancer (Wilcoxon, p = 0.02). Moreover since survival time was significantly shorter in patients with high serum CYFRA 21-1, these levels seemed to be correlated with the prognosis.

Crystallographic characterization of tryptophan-containing peptide 3(10)-helices.

The molecular and crystal structures of four peptides containing one L-Trp guest residue in Aib (alpha-aminoisobutyric acid or C alpha-methyl alanine) host oligopeptide chains have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The peptides are Z-Aib-L-Trp-Aib-OMe, Z-(Aib)2-L-Trp-Aib-OMe, Z-(Aib)3-L-Trp-Aib-OtBu and Boc-(Aib)3-L-Trp-Aib-OMe. Right-handed beta-turns and incipient and fully developed 3(10)-helices are formed in the crystal state by the tri-, tetra- and pentapeptides, respectively. The Trp residue is easily accommodated in these folded structures. The average geometry and preferred conformation for the Trp indolyl side chain are also discussed.
