[Variations in the enzymatic activity in the calf muscle of the rat following ischemia].

Muscle lesions induced by ischaemia have been investigated in depth from the morphological standpoint, though the metabolic changes thus caused are still the subjects of discussion. Measurements were therefore made of enzyme activities in rat calf muscle, and their changes following incomplete ischaemia. Three enzymes were studied: CPK (typical of muscle metabolism), G-6-PDH (pentose cycle, indicator of the extent of repair processes), and uptake of a labelled amino acid (L-leucine, on the part of tissue proteins. An initial increase in activity and uptake was followed by recovery functions, due to installation of a collateral circulation. This appeared to be complete by the 5th day.

[Modifications of the enzymatic activity in the calf muscle of the rat in circulatory stasis].

In the attempt to identify enzymatic variations in the sural muscle of rats as a result of arterial ischaemia, the enzymatic variations of LDH, PHI, MDH, GOT, G-6-PDH and CPK were measured in a sural muscle in which both arterial ischaemia and venous stasis were induced. From the results examined it may be concluded that both techniques produce reversible lesions and that there is no significant difference in enzymatic activity between the two experimental conditions.

[Epileptic psychoses].

A psychotic episode is described in a 21 year old male suffering since the age of 14 of generalized convulsions and tipical absences, scarecely controlled by antiepileptic drugs. The psychotic episode took place after a "Petit Mal Status", and was characterized by behaviour disorders, psycomotor excitement and delusions. During the episode the EEG became normal and epileptic seizures were not observed. Treatment with neuroleptics was followed by reduction of psychic disturbances.

[The early diagnosis of congenital hip dysplasia: a proposal for a differentiated echographic screening].

Prevention of congenital hip dislocation is one of the main goals of pediatric activity. 839 newborn outpatients, with six months follow-up at least, were recruited at the Pediatric Clinic of the Catholic University of Rome, from January 1991 to December 1992. Every newborn baby was clinically examined for congenital hip dysplasia (CHD) at nursery and afterwards in the ambulatory. Hip sonography was performed, according to Graf's technique, in 504 babies (60%): 17 resulted pathological (3.3%), 30 borderline (6%) and 457 normal (90.7%). Ultrasonographic and clinical findings were compared. Clinical examinations at nursery and ambulatory have shown low sensitivity (21.3% and 34% respectively) in detecting dysplastic hips. Present experience confirms ultrasonography value in the diagnosis of CHD and the utility of its use in a general screening programme.

[The role of 3D CT in the treatment of maxillofacial malformations].

The computed tomographic studies obtained routinely in the examination of patients with congenital defects of facial bones can be utilized as a substrate to provide an accurate three-dimensional representation of osseous abnormalities. It is a useful tool for the maxillo-facial surgeon in clinical application, in diagnosis, accurate measurements, preoperative planning and post-operative follow-up. The experience of the Division of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of Bellaria Hospital and of the Radiological Department of Instituto Rizzoli at Bologna is presented.

[Liver damage and obesity in pediatric age].

In adult obese patients both an increase of aminotranspherase values and hepatic steatosis have been frequently showed. Conversely in childhood the existence of a liver's damage is often not investigated. To assess the prevalence of hepatic alterations in obese children, we studied 135 subjects, all affected by simple obesity, showing in a 20% of them the presence of ultrasonographic evidence of hepatic steatosis and/or hyperaminotransferasemia. Our study demonstrates the existence of silent hepatic alterations also in obese children and suggests to improve the treatment of obesity in childhood to prevent the progression of liver's damage.

[Valley/peak ratio and pressure changes during treatment with fosinopril in hypertensive elderly patients].

Antihypertensive drug therapy uniformity of efficacy was evaluated in a group of elderly hypertensive subjects with trough-to-peak ratio, after a period of antihypertensive drug therapy with ACE-inhibitor fosinopril. An ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) with evaluation of blood pressure variability assessed by standard deviation (S.D.) and coefficient of variation (C.V.) were evaluated in each subjects. Our preliminary data showed that the treatment with fosinopril had satisfactory uniformity of efficacy during all the 24-hour period, with both full dose (20 mg) and reduced dose (10 mg); little influence on blood pressure variability was determined by antihypertensive treatment.

Ergonomic approach in aging: experimental procedures to assess cognitive and balance impairments.

This brief commentary is focused on the experimental procedures employed in the evaluation of both cognitive and balance impairments of aging patients. This is an important ergonomic issue that might be used for research purposes. In fact, the corrected assessment of impairments during aging may favor the development of new integrated ergonomic strategies to ameliorate ADL together with the reduction of environmental risks.
