[Caustic esophagogastric lesions].

The authors treated is an emergency, severe esofagogastric lesions, in adults, by caustics ingestions. They present seven cases and discuss six deaths. Critical analysis of these observations compared with the findings of pathology and in the literature, permit one to consider the therapeutic indications. The early surgical treatment is suggested as the best way to obtain a more acceptable survival.

Salivary gland tumors in children.

Tumors of salivary gland origin are relatively uncommon in children. Over a 23-yr period, there were 12 such tumors affecting children under 16 yr of age out of a total 937 cases reported by a central cancer registry. The commonest lesion was the pleomorphic adenoma involving the parotid gland. Wide focal excision seemed to be an adequate procedure as long as the tumor was completely removed. Inadequate excision resulted in multiple local recurrences with the tumor taking on more malignant characteristics. Early radical excision, with preservation of the facial nerve, is advocated.

New broad-spectrum alkylthio cephalosporins.

A series of 7-substituted alkyl-thio-acylaminocephalosporins with the following general formula were prepared and tested for in vitro antibacterial activity: (formula: see text). We tried in our research to find any relationship between antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetic properties on the one hand, and chemical structure on the other. The most interesting products were also studied for their in vivo antibacterial activity in experimental acute systemic infections in the mouse.

Tolciclate: further antimycotic studies.

In vitro comparison on dermatophytes showed, on a microgram-per-milliliter basis, that tolciclate was more active than clotrimazole and miconazole in inhibiting the growth of dermatophytes in Sabouraud agar with and without 10% horse serum.

Prolonged and monosymptomatic dysphasic status epilepticus.

Dysphasic seizures are an infrequent form of epilepsy, and their serial appearance as a partial status epilepticus is quite exceptional. The young patient reported here had a partial dysphasic status epilepticus of 3 weeks' duration without other temporal lobe seizures. Simultaneous serial electroencephalograms, tape recordings of the seizures, and repeated neuropsychologic ictal examinations permitted studies of increased impairment of neuropsychologic function on testing and the appearance of new irritative discharges on encephalography.

New data on the mechanism and speed of action of nitroimidazoles on prokaryota and eukaryota with and without mitochondria.

The spectrum of action of nitroimidazoles ranges from anaerobic bacteria to aerobic bacteria which are also capable of growth, although sometimes with difficulty, in anaerobic atmosphere and to protozoa without and with mitochondria; in the latter case the anti-protozoal activity depends on the importance of the extramitochondrial enzymes which respond to nitroimidazoles. The more anaerobic the organisms, the greater their sensitivity. In the most sensitive protozoa, the trichomonads, most of the enzymatic reactions inhibited by these drugs take place in the hydrogenosomes; these are cytoplasmatic organelles surrounded by a membrane whose disintegration, in fact, is the first visible effect of the action of the nitroimidazoles. Various nitroimidazoles act with different speed on these and other protozoa, whose membranes can difinitely possess different degrees of permeability towards substances with different chemico-physical characteristics. In the treatment of trichomoniasis, the specific speed of action of a drug is perhaps as important as its half-life in man.
