In 293 healthy, 18--30-year-old male adults (241 well trained athletes with different training types: (A) endurance, (B) mixed, and (C) power training; (D) 52 untrained students), serum total cholesterol and the cholesterol fractions (HDL-, VLDL-, LDL-cholesterol) were investigated. In comparison with the untrained students, lower LDL- and VLDL-cholesterol concentrations were found in group (A) (-0.23 mmol/l, p < 0.01; -0.08 mmol/l, p < 0.001), lower HDL-cholesterol concentrations were found in group (C) (-0.33 mmol/l, p < 0.001). Increased HDL-cholesterol values and decreased VLDL- and LDL-cholesterol values were found in athletes with a rising oxygen-uptake; a significant, age-related increase in HDL-cholesterol occurred only in endurance-trained persons. There was no significant correlation between relative body weight and the HDL-cholesterol in the subjects examined.
One hundred patients admitted consecutively to a state psychiatric hospital were tested to determine their literacy skills in both ward recognition and reading comprehension. In addition, the readability of literature intended to inform patients about various aspects of their hospitalization was evaluated to determine if a significant discrepancy existed between literacy demands on patients and their literacy skills. Results showed that the majority of the patients were functionally illiterate in reading comprehension skills but literate in their ability to recognize or pronounce words. Educational background correlated with the ability to pronounce words, but was not predictive of reading comprehension skills. Hospital document demanded reading comprehension skills far in excess of the literacy skills of most patients. Procedures for minimizing this discrepancy are discussed.
In 6 groups of children and juveniles (aged 8-16 ys) the exercise induced changes (cross country skiing of different durations) in various blood-parameters (Na, K, Ca, Mg, glucose, lactic acid, free fatty acids, glycerol, triglycerides, cholesterol, urea, CK-activity) are shown in contrast to changes in adults. It was found, that there are differences in the matabolic behaviour of the groups examined; previous data in adults must be applied, with restrictions, to results found in children or juveniles. Single parameters are not sufficient to obtain informations about influences of intensive endurance training in juveniles. Remarkable changes after long-lasting exercise must be expected in the blood values of K, Mg, urea, insulin and STH.

Eight successful pregnancies and one spontaneous abortion have been observed in 5 women belonging to a group of 212 Nordic children who had their antileukemic therapy discontinued before January 1, 1978. Furthermore a young leukemic man was the father of a healthy child after 4 years of intensive cytostatic therapy. No malformations have been observed in the progeny of these treated individuals.
The cytochrome P-450-dependent steroid 15 beta-hydroxylase system from Bacillus megaterium has been resolved into three components, 1) a NADPH-specific, FMN-containing flavoprotein reductase, molecular weight 55-60 000; 2) an iron-sulfur protein, molecular weight 13,000 and 3) cytochrome P-450meg, molecular weight 52,000. The cytochrome component has been purified to homogeneity, as judged by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel, and its amino acid composition has been determined. Cytochrome P-450meg has a pI of 4.9, a Stokes radius of 27 A and a sedimentation constant of 3.3 S. Electron paramagnetic resonance and optical spectra are typical of a low-spin cytochrome P-450. The fluorescence spectrum is indicative of a tryptophane residue in a relatively non-polar environment. In recombination experiments, the electron flow was shown to proceed from the reductase via the iron-sulfur protein to the cytochrome. It is also possible to exchange the different components of the mitochondrial 11 beta-hydroxylase system from bovine adrenals for corresponding components in B. megaterium. Substrate specificity studies indicate that only steroids with a 3-oxo-delta 4-configuration are hydroxylated by the B. megaterium hydroxylase system. When oxidizing agents were used, hydroxylation occurred both in positions 15 alpha and 15 beta. Further substrate specificity studies have shown that aniline and imipramine can function as substrates for the bacterial system.
The heart rate performance, cardiac output and catecholamine excretion were observed at rest in the ergometer test (40 min at 50 watts) in a group of 8 pregnant women whose case history and clinical record did not reveal any abnormal findings, during the course of pregnancy (20th, 28th and 36th weeks of pregnancy) as well as 2 and 12 weeks post partum. It was found that the cardiac output increased, dependent upon the heart rate, the stroke volume remaining approximately constant (max. + 60%) during pregnancy, compared with the controls post partum. There is a close linear correlation (r = 0.983) between the measured heart rates and the corresponding excretion of epinephrine (adrenalin) with the urine at rest and under load. It may be assumed that there is a causative link between the increase in secretion of catecholamine by the mother and the well-known change in cardiac output during pregnancy.
In 18 groups of trained healthy male subjects (n = 166; age 17--42 years) the influence of type and duration of long-lasting exercise on the changes of creatine kinase (CPK) and hexose phosphate isomerase (PHI) activity in serum was studied. Above 65--70% of maximal aerobic capacity, a serum enzyme activity increase proportional to the exercise time was found with a different slope in each of the three exercise types examined [a) bicycle ergometer; b) ski race; c) impact-type exertion]. Work duration of more than 300 min induced in the third type of exertion an accelerated increase in serum CPK. A third degree equation best describes the changes in serum CPK for nine of our groups and five others from the literature. To ascertain the possible influence of intravascular hemolysis, sera were mixed with autologous erythrocyte hemolysates and enzyme activity measured. The findings are discussed with reference to critical aspects of the analytical methods, possible causes of serum enzyme changes, and possible use of enzyme measurements in evaluating adaptation of the organism to prolonged exercise.
L-Alanine was measured by an enzymic micromethod in serum after treatment with perchloric acid, as well as after ultrafiltration through collodium membrane filters. Serum L-alanine was also determined by an automated column chromatographic technique. Using the enzymic method, spuriously increased L-alanine levels could be obtained due to the absorbent reaction between hydrazine and NAD-containing reagents. It could be shown that this absorbent reaction depends on the pH value of the test solution. In contrast to supernatant diluted by perchloric acid, ultrafiltrates gave L-alanine data equivalent to those by column chromatography, since conditions of reaction time and pH value could be kept identical for blank, standard and ultrafiltrate solutions.
Creatine kinase (CPK) and hexose phosphate isomerase (PHI) activities were measured in surgically obtained skeletal muscle samples of healthy adult men (n = 45). Median values of 4,200 for CPK and 275 for PHI (U/g wet weight, 37 degrees C) were found. Duplicate determinations on 7 samples divided and treated separately gave a very good reproducibility. There is a significant relationship between the activity of the two enzymes (r = +0.798, p less than 0.001). The mean activity levels were for both enzymes higher in m. vastus medialis quadricipitis and m. triceps brachii, c. long., than in vastus lateralis quadric. and in deltoideus. PHI frequency distribution was not of the normal type but probably bimodal, suggesting muscle types with lower and higher glycolytic rate in man.

Activities of serum amino acid arylpeptidases were determined in five groups of healthy male adults at rest and after various exercise types using the following substrates: Ala-, Leu-, Phe-, Tyr-, Gly- and Pro-4-Nitroanilide. The exercise-induced changes were compared to the activities of the respective enzymes in resting leg muscles. A regression function was found, showing a close correlation between the mentioned parameters in all groups. The influence of haemoconcentration and intravascular hemolysis on the postexercise measured activities was of no consequence.

In eight groups of healthy male athlets, aged 19-44 years, serum urea, alpha-amino nitrogen and free tyrosine were determined before and after physical exercise of different duration. Exercise was competitional running, skiing, march or bicycle ergometer work, its duration between 15 and 765 min. The results were compared with previous data from this laboratory and those of other authors. After about 60-70 min of exertion, there is a significant fall in serum amino nitrogen and a rise in urea and free tyrosine; the magnitude of these changes correlated well to the duration of exercise. Likewise, there is a significant correlation between increase in serum urea and decrease in amino nitrogen. The observed changes strongly suggest an increased breakdown of nitrogen-containing compounds during prolonged exercise.
