Possible aetiopathogenetic correlation between primary empty sella and arachnoid cyst.

Three cases of surgically treated non-neoplastic diseases of the sella (two arachnoid cysts and one empty sella) are reported. All three patients had visual deficits but no gross endocrine disturbances. The study of these three clinical cases and an analysis of the relevant literature suggest a possible unitary hypothesis regarding the pathogenesis of sellar arachnoid cysts and empty sella.

Red cell lysis coupled to the peroxidation of liver microsomal lipids. Compartmentalization of the hemolytic system.

As a contribution to the understanding of the mechanisms by which addition of erythrocytes to liver microsomes incubated in the NADPH dependent system results in hemolysis, experiments are presented here in which the system containing actively peroxidizing microsomes was separated from the system containing the red blood cells by a dialysis membrane. It is shown that when liver microsomes were incubated with NADPH, lipid peroxidation, as measured by the formation of malonic dialdehyde (MDA), rapidly took place. The MDA concentration tended to equilibrate across the dialysis membrane. After a lag phase of 60 min, lysis of erythrocytes contained in the dialysis tube, started. It reached its maximal level (more than 80%) at 110 min of incubation. These results strongly suggest the possibility that toxic products originating during the course of lipid peroxidation induce pathological effect at distant loci. Furthermore, the accomplishment of a compartmentalization of the two systems involved in the reaction, may offer an approach to the recognition of the toxic factors.

Direct attack on carotid ophthalmic and large internal carotid aneurysms.

Some cases of carotid-ophthalmic and large internal carotid aneurysms successfully excluded from the carotid circulation by direct approach are presented. The principal anatomical and clinical features of the two groups of aneurysms, together with the technique used, are described. It is concluded that direct attack is the treatment of choice because it ensures exclusion of the aneurysm, permits sparing of internal carotid artery and removal of the aneurysmal sac where it compresses adjacent nervous structures.

Mitotic activity of adrenal medullary cells in the mouse at different ages and following unilateral adrenalectomy.

The number of mitoses as well as the number of the cells of the adrenal medulla was determined in the mouse at various ages and after unilateral adrenalectomy. It was found that a decrease in the mitoses and an increase in the cell number occurs up to 4 months. In 12-month-old rats, mitoses, although rare, are still present. No changes in the mitosis and cell number was observed after unilateral adrenalectomy.

A case of persistent hypoglossal artery.

A personal case of persistent hypoglossal artery is presented and the literature on the subject from 1967 to the present reviewed. The 16 cases collected, following on the 26 already reported in the well-known monograph of T.A. Lie on congenital anomalies of the carotid arteries, complete the statistical picture of this malformation. After discussing the embryonic origin and describing the radiological anatomy of the anomaly, the authors briefly present their case and discuss, in the light of the cases collected, the possible role of persistent hypoglossal artery in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases of the head.

Aneurysm of the internal auditory artery revealed by a partial cerebellopontine angle syndrome.

A case of aneurysm of the distal portion of the middle cerebellar artery is described. The aneurysm was clipped and, as the neck was long, removed. The case is of interest not only because of its rarity but also because of the unusual course of the symptoms, the difficulty of identifying and locating the malformation, overcome with the aid of modern radiological techniques, and because of the success of surgical treatment.
