Bachelor scurvy.

Scurvy occurred in an elderly man with fatigue, dyspnea on exertion, and extensive ecchymoses and brawny edema of the legs. Platelet count, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time were normal, but serum ascorbic acid level was very low. Other signs considered to be classic and almost pathognomonic for were absent: bleeding gums, hyperkeratotic follicles, coiled hairs, and perifollicular hemorrhages. Reliance on these well-known features of scurvy may obscure or delay diagnosis of an easily cured disorder Severe scurvy is most commonly suggested by tenderness, extensive ecchymoses, and brawny edema of the lower extremities.

The Fi-gene product of bacteriophage lambda. Purification and properties.

The FI gene product of bacteriophage lambda has been purified extensively using a biochemical assay that measures assembly of lambda phage particles in vitro. The molecular weight of the native protein was estimated to be 21700 with an S20, w of 2.1 S and a Stokes radius of 2.5 nm. The molecular weight in dodecylsulfate was estimated to be 19000. The protein is highly acidic with an isoelectric point less than 4.1.

[Neutralizing capacity, pepsin inactivation and binding to bile acids and lysolecithin of the antacid magaldrate (author's transl)].

The neutralizing capacity of pentaaluminum-decamagnesiumhentriacontahydroxide-bis(sulfate)-hydrate (magaldrate, Riopan), a stable Al-Mg-hydroxide mono-substance, determined by a modification of the method described in literature, surpasses the efficacy index (mval divided by g) of various commercial antacids. These results coincide with the findings of other workers. The intragastric pH is rapidly and consistently raised to a value between 3 and 5 which is not exceeded (no acid rebound). Due to this fact, pepsin is inactivated and finally adsorbed by magaldrate. Moreover, magaldrate binds a considerable amount of substances contained in duodeno-gastric reflux, such as bile acids and lysolecithin (aggressors in case of gastritis, peptic ulcer, stress ulcer, peptic esophagitis).

Forced eruption: biological and clinical considerations.

The biological width and its importance in the restoration of teeth that have been fractured down to the level of the osseous crest are discussed. Orthodontic principles and clinical considerations in carrying out forced eruption are outlined. A case report demonstrating the practical aspects of treatment is presented.
