The intertidal distribution of two algal symbionts hosted by Anthopleura xanthogrammica (Brandt 1835).

This paper quantifies the spatial distribution of zooxanthellae (ZX) and zoochlorellae (ZC), two algal symbionts common to the temperate anemone, Anthopleura xanthogrammica, in relation to shore height. Anemones in tidepools and crevices had varying algal proportions: >0.90 ZC (green anemones), 0.10 to 0.90 ZX (mixed), and >0.90 ZX (brown). Brown anemones are primarily found in the high intertidal and the upper region of tidepools. Mixed anemones are most common at intermediate shore heights and green anemones are exclusive to the low shore and at increasing depth in tidepools. Microhabitat was also important to algal proportion, as anemones in crevices had greater proportions of ZC than anemones in tidepools at the same shore height. In a reciprocal transplant experiment, A. xanthogrammica were moved between high and low shallow tidepools. All anemones moved from a low to a high tidepool exhibited a shift from ZC to ZX populations, while the anemones transplanted from high to low tidepools maintained ZX dominance. This is the first documentation that field algal populations can shift from ZC to ZX in Anthopleura. The field survey and transplant study results support the hypothesis that the relative abundance of ZX and ZC in A. xanthogrammica is influenced by the environmental gradient associated with shore height and microhabitat.

Lateral canthotomy and inferior cantholysis: an effective method of urgent orbital decompression for sight threatening acute retrobulbar haemorrhage.

Retrobulbar haemorrhage (RBH) occurs in a variety of situations. It can complicate facial fractures, orbital surgery and retrobulbar injections and can occur spontaneously. It is relatively uncommon and sight-threatening RBH is even less common. If not detected early enough it can lead to devastating loss of vision. We have collected five cases of acute RBH, following trauma, associated with a profound reduction in vision. In each case a permanent loss of vision was avoided using a lateral canthotomy and inferior cantholysis approach to obtain urgent orbital decompression.

Cerebellar hypoplasia in the second trimester associated with microcephaly at birth.

The antenatal diagnosis of microcephaly is most commonly made in the third trimester. Biometric measurements of the head of three or four standard deviations below the mean are suggestive of microcephaly. We report a case of microcephaly where abnormalities in intracerebral architecture, i.e. cerebellar hypoplasia, were noted early in the second trimester.

Isolated complex limb reduction abnormality diagnosed antenatally.

Congenital limb reduction defects are rare lesions that are usually associated with other anomalies. Terminal defects are the commonest reduction defects. The aetiology seems to be multifactorial. We present a case of congenital terminal deficiency of the same side of the upper and lower limbs diagnosed by ultrasound scanning during the second trimester. The fetus had an absent right fibula and right foot, a hypoplastic right hand and left talipes equinovarus. The pregnancy was terminated. Micrognathia was the only associated anomaly found on postmortem examination. The cause of this isolated anomaly is unknown but, because of the very variable presentation of limb reduction defects, could possibly fit into the categories so far described in the literature.

Raising public awareness of child abuse issues.

Lincolnshire area child protection committee focused its 1991 public awareness campaign on verbal abuse of children. Mary Dundon and Angela Bates report on the success of the campaign: 'What do children hear? harsh words hurt--kind words help', and the lessons learned for future initiatives.

Medical illness and the acceptance of suffering.

This article challenges the belief that depression and anxiety are the inevitable consequences of medical illness. The authors describe how cognitive behavioral therapy can help individuals accept their disabilities and modify the distorted thinking patterns which may compound their suffering. Three case studies demonstrate the successful application of cognitive techniques to feelings of depression and anxiety in two patients with Stage III ovarian carcinoma and one patient with multiple sclerosis.

Evidence for the abstractive encoding of superficial position information in visual patterns.

When presented a series of patterns inside a frame, subjects unintentionally retained information concerning the frame-relative location of the elements composing the patterns; they could use this superficial information to estimate the frequency with which the elements occurred at various locations within the frame. There were two aspects of the results that supported the hypothesis that this superficial element-location information was abstractively encoded and, therefore, retrievable independent of the patterns comprising the elements: (1) Correlations between actual and estimated frequency remained significant after the effects of pattern recall were partialled out, and (2) correlations were enhanced by assuming that the frequency estimate for each location was affected by the imprecise coding of position for elements falling in surrounding locations. Additional experiments indicated that an orienting task emphasizing pattern recall resulted in very inaccurate estimation of element-location frequency, and intentional instructions improved the precision of position coding for individual elements.

Changes in the concentrations of bile acids in the plasma of sheep with liver damage.

The concentration of total plasma bile acids was measured in normal sheep and in sheep in which liver damage was induced by chronic copper poisoning, ligated bile ducts or induced ketosis. All three treatments produced a rise in total bile acid concentration in plasma which was proportional to the degree of hepatic damage seen histologically and which tended to parallel changes in activity of iditol, and glutamate dehydrogenase and aspartate amino-transferase in plasma. Plasma bile acid concentration was a more sensitive method of detecting these types of liver damage than was the measurement of total plasma bilirubin concentration, and could be used to assess alterations in liver function in sheep.

Thermal control of maternal contact bouts: the interbout interval.

Cooling mother rats by means of sodium salicylate injections did not curtail the intervals between maternal contact bouts. To the contrary, the interbout intervals were prolonged, suggesting that the relief from hyperthermia is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for the reinitiation of pup contact by mother rats. The ability of sodium salicylate to suppress maternal temperature suggests that pyrogenic and lactational increases in temperature may have some common feature.

Sensitization to cocaine stimulation in mice.

Repeated administration of cocaine to B6AF1/J mice increased their running response to 20 mg/kg cocaine as much as four-fold over the response to the first injection. After four daily injections, the extent of the increase was proportional to the dose of cocaine that was used for pretreatment. Sensitization persisted for as long as 2 months after the last injection of cocaine. Cocaine-pretreated mice did not show an increased running response to either morphine or d-amphetamine. The response to cocaine was increased two-fold by treatment with morphine and three-fold by pretreatment with d-amphetamine. Pretreatment with either imipramine or reserpine did not produce sensitization to cocaine. There was no correlation between cocaine sensitization and whole-brain catecholamine levels. There were marked differences in both the running response to cocaine and the extent of cocaine sensitization betwee the parental strains, C57B1/6J and A/J. Experiments with recombinant-inbred lines, derived from C57B1/6By and BALB/cBy mice, suggest that the initial response to cocaine and the development of sensitization are controlled by different genetic determinants.
