Recurrent sinus of the cheek due to a retained foreign body: report of an unusual case.

Pathological sinuses in the maxillofacial region are frequently encountered in clinical practice. These sinuses may be a sequelae of periapical and periodontal pathologies or infections like osteomyelitis, actinomycosis etc. Classical clinical symptoms and radiographic features accompany all these infections. Rarely, sinuses in the oro-facial region can be sequelae of retained occult foreign bodies like wood in the soft tissues. We report a case of recurrent sinus of the cheek caused by an occult wooden splinter and discuss its diagnosis and clinical management.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a congenital disorder characterized by triad of vascular nevi, venous varicosities and hyperplasia of soft and hard tissues in the affected area. This syndrome usually affects the extremities but occasionally can manifest in the craniofacial region, including the oral cavity. We report a case of KTS and discuss the oro-surgical and dental considerations regarding hemorrhagic tendencies caused by the known local anomalies such as vascular malformations associated with this syndrome as well as systemic abnormalities.

Mandibular resorption in progressive systemic sclerosis: a report of three cases.

Progressive systemic sclerosis is a generalized collagen disorder, which is characterized by fibrosis that involves skin, muscles and other organ systems like the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, heart and kidneys. Its oral manifestations include features like restricted mouth opening, widening of periodontal ligament space, pseudoankylosis, malocclusion and mandibular resorption. Mandibular resorption in systemic sclerosis is relatively uncommon and is reported only in 10% of cases. The purpose of reporting these three cases is to highlight the importance of screening all patients with advanced systemic sclerosis with panoramic radiographs. Panoramic radiographs are essential for early detection of resorption in the mandible to prevent possible consequences like pathological fractures, osteomyelitis and neuropathies.
