Synergistic activities of isepamicin (ISP) and a beta-lactam antibiotic such as piperacillin (PIPC) or cefotaxime (CTX) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa were demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. In vitro synergistic activity was observed when ISP was used together PIPC or CTX. The synergy observed in vitro was reproduced in vivo against experimental mouse infections, and a ISP-PIPC or a ISP-CTX combination showed significantly greater protective effects than individual antibiotics by themselves.
Two cases of persistent trigeminal artery variant were found in 2000 cases who had examination of cerebral angiography in our hospital from 1975 to 1986. The first case was a 44-year-old female who admitted in our hospital for the examination of vertigo. Cerebral angiography demonstrated a superior cerebellar artery originating from the precavernous portion of the right internal carotid artery. The second case was a 67-year-old female who admitted in our hospital for the treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography demonstrated an anterior inferior cerebellar artery originating from the precavernous portion of the right internal carotid artery. In this case, a fusiform aneurysm was found in the origin of the persistent trigeminal artery variant. The ruptured aneurysm was thought to be a basilar artery aneurysm.
The status of the regional lymph nodes influences the prognosis of women with breast cancer who have received a radical mastectomy. To investigate the characteristics of patients with negative nodes who have had a recurrent breast cancer, a statistical study has been carried out involving 279 women who had received a radical mastectomy in our hospital from July 1970 to October 1986. From this study we conclude that systemic adjuvant therapy after radical mastectomy is necessary for patients with negative nodes who have had a breast cancer greater than 2.1 cm (T2) in diameter or a solid-tubular carcinoma.

The permeability of the materno-fetal barrier in the chorioallantoic placenta was studied in guinea pigs with gestation at term applying a variety of electron-opaque tracers via maternal circulation. None of the tracers tested was seen permeating the syncytiotrophoblast in the materno-fetal direction up to a 20 min interval when the fine structure of the placenta was satisfactorily preserved. The lanthanum chloride, cationized ferritin and horseradish peroxidase bound to the trophoblast surface, apparently due to electrostatic forces more than to specific receptors, and no uptake of these probes was detected in the cytoplasm. Albumin-colloidal gold complex, also used as a tracer, yielded similar results. As reported in other species with more complex syncytiotrophoblastic organization, this layer investing maternal lacunae is a highly selective permeability barrier.
Secretion of different molecular forms of prolactin was studied from a multidisciplinary standpoint in three different experimental rat models which covered the broadest range of lactotrophic activity. The results obtained allowed the recognition of common secretory patterns in stimulated, inhibited and hyperstimulated lactotrophic activity. Polymeric (big) prolactin is stored exclusively in membrane-bound secretory granules and appears to be a convenient biochemical marker with which to quantify the pool of hormone stored in the cell cytoplasm, while monomeric (small) prolactin represents a pool of newly synthesized hormone which is loosely coupled to organelles involved in its intracellular processing. Most of the prolactin in stimulated lactotrophs is processed through a regulated pathway and the hormone released by exocytosis of secretory granules. Interruption of stimulation resulted in accumulation of secretory granules and polymeric prolactin. In hyperstimulated lactotrophs the polymerization and aggregation of prolactin into secretory granules was bypassed and most of the hormone released directly after its synthesis. The pattern of prolactin secretion could be closely correlated with the dynamic state of the lactotroph.
