Eggs, serum lipids, emotional stress, and blood pressure in medical students.

Emotional stress that occurred as a result of anticipation and participation in final exams did not change mean serum total cholesterol or high density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly in 26 male students who had eaten two eggs daily while maintaining a controlled diet for 12 wk. These same men continued to maintain a controlled diet but abstained from eating eggs for 12 wk which resulted in a statistically significant lower total cholesterol level at the end of 6 wk and on the day of final exams at the end of 12 wk. Mean values for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in abstainers were significantly reduced at the end of 6 wk, but did not change further by 12 wk. Mean serum triglycerides values were variable. Blood pressures were not changed significantly.

Rat liver cytochrome P450IA2 synthesized by transfected COS-1 cells efficiently activates food-derived promutagens.

A standard calcium phosphate technique was used to obtain transient expression of cDNAs for rat liver cytochrome P450s in COS-1 cells. Cells transfected with a pMT2-based vector expressing P450IA2 cDNA (pMT2-IA2) had high acetanilide-4-hydroxylase activity and very low aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity. Cells transfected with a hybrid expression vector, pMT2-IA2/IA1, coding for a P450IA2/IA1 fusion protein (consisting of the amino-terminal region of P450IA2 and the central and carboxy-terminal regions of P450IA1) had high AHH activity. This result and other data indicate that the P450IA2/IA1 fusion protein has the substrate specificity of P450IA1. Extracts of cells transfected with pMT2-IA2 readily converted 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (MeIQ) and related food-derived promutagens into mutagenic forms. Extracts of cells transfected with pMT2-IA2/IA1 showed efficient activation of 3-amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole (Trp P-2). To facilitate comparison of activities of P450s synthesized from cDNA expression vectors, the promutagen activation assays were carried out with limiting enzyme and saturating or nearly saturating substrate concentrations. The transient expression system described here uses a standard expression vector and requires only microgram quantities of cell extract protein for activation of food-derived promutagens such as MeIQ and Trp P-2. It will be useful for identifying P450s active in promutagen activation and for analyzing structure-function relationships of different P450 molecules.

Unsung heroes.

This article describes learning modules developed by faculty to assist community health nursing students to care for patients with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. These modules were problem based using the protocol format PACES (Problem Identification, Assessment, Creative Problem Solving, Emphasis and Simplicity) to assist students and caregivers to individualize care planning. Caring theory provided the unifying thread for the project.

Social class, social support and obesity risk in children.

Selected characteristics of the social environment are tested as predictors of children's risk for obesity. Data were collected during the summer of 1991 at the University of South Alabama Springhill Paediatric Clinic (Mobile, AL, USA). Data were collected on 77 children, aged 2.5-5 years, and their primary caretaker. Obesity risk was measured by the child's weight for height score and calorie intake. Caretaker's socio-economic status, marital status, and social support predict children's obesity risk for this sample. Lower social class position, lower expressive social support, and unmarried status of the caretaker are associated with a higher calorie intake and a higher weight for height score in the child.
