Maxillary double lip: report of two cases.

Two cases of double lip malformation, an uncommon oral anomaly, are presented, and the factors involved in the development, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of these uncommon lesions are reviewed. Double lip is usually associated with Ascher's syndrome, which is a rare disease with three more or less consistently associated abnormalities: double upper lip, blepharochalasis and enlargement of the thyroid. Two cases of double lip are reported; one of which was related with Ascher's syndrome, while the other had a traumatic origin.

A case of localized ridge augmentation from using a titanium membrane: a pilot study.

The aim of this investigation was to histologically compare the effects of new titanium membranes with those of proven expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes on alveolar ridge augmentation. The study was carried out using a canine mandible where the right and left premolar teeth were previously extracted. At the second month of healing following extraction, a total of seven similar defects were created on both sides of the mandible. Three defects received the titanium membrane, one of which was in the right side of the mandible. Two defects, one on each side, received the ePTFE membrane. The remaining two defects, both on the right side, served as control. Fixation and stabilization of the membranes were accomplished by using the Frios Augmentation System. After three months of healing, the animal was sacrificed, block sections were taken and processed for histological examination according to the cutting and grinding technique. The results revealed that the ePTFE and titanium-treated defects, and the controls, showed complete bone fill with the exception that there was a more pronounced and thicker connective tissue formation in titanium-treated sites as compared to the ePTFE treated and control sites.

Uterine liposarcoma in a young woman: a case report.

Liposarcoma of uterus is a very rare neoplasm encountered generally in the sixth or seventh decade of life. We reported the eighth case of uterine liposarcoma with extension to broad ligament in a 23-year-old woman who presented with pelvic pain, dysuria, and rapidly enlarging pelvic mass. During laparotomy, the mass was detected to be originated from the uterine cervix. In frozen section, no definitive diagnosis was established, and for preservation of fertility, extirpation of the mass was performed. The histopathologic examination of the specimen revealed liposarcoma. The tumor cells were diffusely and intensively immune reactive for vimentin and S-100, and negative for smooth muscle actin, desmin, h-caldesmon, pan cytokeratin, and CD10. Staining with periodic acid and Schiff, alcian blue, mucicarmine, and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) were negative. No recurrence was detected in the postoperative seventh month. Present case is the youngest patient with uterine liposarcoma and also the first case detected in reproductive period.

Clinical significance of N-acetyl-L-aspartate resonance in ovarian mucinous cystadenoma.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides a noninvasive measurement of the biochemistry of living tissue. We report spectroscopy analysis of a 26-year-old woman affected by right ovarian lesion diagnosed as mucinous cystadenoma. MRS was performed by the point-resolved spectroscopy technique with a long echo time (TE) (136 msec). MRS measurements were performed on the two distinct component of the right ovarian tumor. The classification of metabolite peaks area in this study was performed according to the technique described by Okada et al. The features of proton MRS studies are discussed. As well as strongly elevated lactate and N-acetyl-L-aspartate signals, the tumor spectrum showed lipid resonances. Proton MRS imaging may be helpful for the investigation of the underlying pathophysiology of ovarian mucinous cystadenomas.

Evaluation of autogenous grafts used in vestibuloplasty.

Vestibuloplasty is indicated when prosthesis stability is poor due to mandibular or maxillary atrophy. The use of autogenous grafts to provide sufficient vestibular depth is widely accepted. In this retrospective study, the outcomes of vestibuloplasty performed on 41 patients using various types of autogenous grafts (full-thickness skin, dermal, reversed dermal, meshed skin and palatal mucosal) are presented. The best results were obtained with palatal mucosal grafts, but graft size is limited. Meshed skin grafts were shown to be the best alternative.

A clinical study of oral mucous membrane pemphigoid.

We present 13 cases of oral mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) and review the literature. The cases were retrieved from the archives of Ondokuz Mayis University and Gülhane Military Medical Academy, Turkey, between 1997 and 2002. Inclusion criteria were clinical findings of oral MMP verified by histological and immunofluorescent examination. Thirteen patients (two males and 11 females), aged 16-72 years, were identified. Involvement was confined to the mouth in all cases except one, in which the conjunctiva was also affected. Two individuals in the study were < 20 years old, an age group rarely affected. The oral mucosa is often the initial site of MMP lesions, so it is important that dentists as well as physicians are aware of the symptoms and signs. A swift diagnosis, made in consultation with other specialists such as ophthalmologists and dermatologists, is needed in order to prevent a delay in treatment.
