[Variability and reproducibility in the determination of left-ventricular heart volume by cine-MR. A comparison of measurement methods].

Sixteen normal individuals were examined on a 1.5 T instrument using gradient echo sequences (cine-MR). The results of various computations were tested with respect to agreement and reproducibility of the methods. The ejection fractions calculated from bi-plane and 3-dimensional reconstructed volumes showed very low standard deviations of mean values (SD less than 2%). Volumes calculated from a single plane produced the greatest scatter of mean values (SC approximately 5%). In all sixteen subjects, the MR findings showed good reproducibility. There was very little inter-observer variability (variability less than 5%). A comparison of various methods showed that bi-plane and monoplane volume calculations obtained by MR in the cardiac axis are more accurate than those obtained by echocardiography (MR:R greater than 0.75, p less than 0.001; echo:R less than 0.75, p greater than 0.05).

[Use of rectal temperature-time of death nomograms at the scene of death].

The application of the rectal temperature time of death nomogram at the scene of death by 11 authors from 6 lego-medical institutes resulted in a standard deviation of the differences between nomographic and real death time of +/- 1.3 h in 46 cases (group I) with met requirements and clearly defined points of contact, nevertheless, including 9 cases with a more progressive cooling (0.5 greater than Q greater than or equal to 0.2). In cases with a real death time of more than 4h (N = 26) the standard deviation was +/- 1.0 hours corresponding to permissible variation of 95% of +/- 2.0 hours. Consequently, the permissible variation of 95% was much smaller than that suggested by the nomogram. The nomographic death time interval did not agree with the real one in 5 cases out of additional 30 cases with recognizably unsure points of contact (group II).

[Radioactive cesium 137 and cesium 134 in follicle and seminal fluid].

Radioactive caesium nuclids were measured in follicular fluid and seminal plasma after the nuclear power station accident of Chernobyl. Immediately after the event (June - Aug. 86) both Cs 137 and Cs 134 were negative, with the exception of one sample. Increased levels of Cs 137 were found in the next three periods of measurement (Nov. 86 - Jan. 87), (June - Aug. 87), (March 88), with the highest results one year after the accident. Increased levels of Cs 134 were found only in the last two periods of measurement. In seminal plasma, both Cs 137 and Cs 134, were elevated in some samples. An influence on the results of IVF was not registered.

[A semiquantitative assessment of aortic valve insufficiency by cine-MR compared to Doppler color echocardiography and cardioangiography].

A simple, reliable semiquantitative method for evaluating aortic valve insufficiency by means of cine MR is described. Ten normal persons and 36 patients with aortic valve abnormalities were examined in a 1.5 Tesla apparatus using ECG-triggered gradient echo sequences. The heart was imaged along its short axis. Semiquantitative evaluation of aortic valve insufficiency was calculated from an MRI index, which depends on the diameter of the aortic regurgitant jet and on its length; the results were compared with colour Doppler echocardiography and cardioangiography. The MRI index showed better correlation with cardioangiography (r = 0.92) than the correlation between the colour Doppler echocardiography and cardioangiography (r = 0.78). Over and under estimates are less common with MRI than with colour Doppler echocardiography. MRI showed very little interobserver variability (r = 0.96, p less than 0.001). Cine MR is a reliable method for demonstrating aortic valve insufficiency. Using the short axis of the heart, rapid semiquantitative evaluation of the aortic regurgitant jet is regularly possible.

Neural tolerance of iotrolan 300 in ascending cervical myelography: results of a multicenter study.

This study examined the opacification, dose, and tolerance of iotrolan 300 on 231 patients in ascending cervical myelography. The contrast was rated good in 188 (81.4%) of the cases and satisfactory in 40 (17.3%) of the cases. The contrast was poor in only three (1.3%) cases. In 152 patients a dose of 10 ml or less of iotrolan 300 was administered. A good contrast quality was obtained in 84.2% of all examinations. From a total of 231 patients, 146 exhibited no concomitant effects. The intensity of the headache and neck ache was recorded by the patients themselves by means of an analog scale. The frequency and degree of the postmyelographic complaints did not increase with higher doses, i.e., they were not dose dependent. Neurologic irritation, in the form of radicular symptoms, appeared in only 2 of 231 examinations. These data demonstrate that iotrolan 300 is excellent for use in ascending cervical myelography.

[Gas in the pancreas: value of computed tomography].

Intrapancreatic gas in acute pancreatitis is generally due to infection with gas-forming organisms. CT provides evidence of pancreatitis, its extent and complications. The demonstration of gas in an inflamed pancreas indicates abscess formation and is an indication for surgical intervention. A review of our own patients has shown abscess formation in six out of seven patients with gas in the pancreas. The differential diagnosis of gas collections in the region of the pancreas is discussed and illustrated by examples.

[Sodium salts or methylglucamine salts in contrast media for infusion pyelography? (author's transl)].

Tolerance of two contrast media was compared by a double blind study. High doses of iodine (45 g) were used for both contrast substances. Sodium Ioglicinate was giving best radiological contrast but produced more side-effects, especially nausea, as compared to Methylglucamine-Ioglicinate. On the contrary Methylglucamine-Ioglicinate did not give best density but did produce less side-effects. Thus the investigator has to consider very carefully, which of the compounds has to be preferred.

[False positive tumour diagnosis in the caecum(author's transl)].

Radiographic appearances simulating tumours were found in 25 patients; the causes of the mistaken diagnosis are critically analysed. The commonest mistake was caused by inflammatory process (eight patients), caecal contents (seven patients) and an enlarged ileo-caecal valve (five patients). Ways of avoiding such misinterpretation are described.author
