[Myxedema coma].

Five patients, 4 female and 1 male, aged 45 to 73, were observed in myxedema coma between 1984 and 1992. In three patients hypothyroidism was not known. Depressed consciousness, hypothermia, bradycardia and no goiter were common to all and a precipitating factor could be identified in 3 of them. Therapy included L-thyroxine and/or triiodothyronine by nasogastric tube, hydrocortisone and supportive measures. Outcome was good in the 2 patients with known precipitating event, less impaired consciousness and normalization of body temperature by the third day of treatment.

[Hyperthyroidism caused by non-neoplastic inappropriate TSH secretion].

We report a case of hyperthyroidism due to non-neoplastic inappropriate thyrotrophin secretion in a 31 year old woman. Increased T3 and THS levels after thyroidectomy led us to suspect the diagnose. Serum levels were further increased by TRH and only partially suppressed by triiodothyronine and computerised axial tomography showed a normal sellar region. These features are characteristic of inappropriate TSH secretion due to thyrotroph resistance to thyroid hormones. Bromocriptine and octreotide were ineffective in lowering TSH levels. Pregnancy and breastfeeding postponed 3,5,3'-triiodothyroacetic acid therapy.

Synthesis and preliminary in-vitro profile of Sch 34343--a new penem antibacterial agent.

Sch 34343, a new penem antibiotic, has been synthesized by several routes and found to be highly active against both aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms (except Pseudomonas). It has excellent beta-lactamase stability and is bactericidal. The synthetic routes to Sch 34343 and its in-vitro activity compared with other structurally related penems are discussed.

[Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Side effects of drugs used in the treatment of thyroid diseases, on the fetus and the newborn].

The authors allude to the composed anti-thyroid drugs, blocking drugs, iodides, radioactive iodine, lithium carbonate and tyrosine side effects. The most common are composed anti-thyroid drugs and tyrosine. Anti-thyroid drugs risks are related to the tresspassing of the placenta barrier which can induce in goitre and hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones are also very important for the fetus neural development during the first quarter when they cross the placenta.

[Prevention of alveolar bone resorption with the use of hydroxyapatite granules].

The authors describe in review the alveolar absorption according to bone physiology, and the absorption prevention using hydroxylapatite. Finally it is pointed the good preliminary results in a 30 patients study during 8 months using hydroxylapatite (OSTEOPATITE) and plaster particles in alveolar absorption prevention.
