Burkitt's lymphoma of the spinal cord.

The clinical pattern of Burkitt's lymphoma of the cord seen in 20 patients over a five-year period is reported. The age incidence suggests that involvement of the spinal cord occurred in the older child when compared to the child with the jaw tumour. In contrast to the remarkable survival in children with Burkitt's lymphoma of other sites, the results of treatment of of cord involvement have been disappointing. Surgery did not alter the downhill course of the disease.

Abdominal complications of ventriculoperitoneal shunts in Nigerians.

During a period of 12 years, 154 hydrocephalic children were treated with ventriculoperitoneal CSF shunting operations. The abdominal complications thus far encountered include development of a peritoneal fibrous pouch, deliberate extraction of the tube by mothers who mistook it for an Ascaris worm, failure of CSF absorption by the peritoneum giving rise to ascites, spontaneous extrusion of the abdominal tube, bowel perforation and volvulus.

The importance of spinal anaesthesia in surgical practice in tropical Africa.

Any medical officer or surgeon who intends to practice in tropical or young developing countries must be proficient in the use of local and spinal anaesthetics because of severe shortage of anesthetists and anesthetic machines. We have presented 95 cases operated on by us in three "peripheral" hospitals in the Western State of Nigeria. These cases included gastrectomy; cholecystectomy, vagectomy and pyloroplasty and splenectomy. We have also presented our method of administering spinal anaesthetics and of preventing major complication of cardiac arrest. We have reviewed briefly the physiology and complication of spinal anaesthesia.

Mesencephalic spur (beaking deformity of the tectum) in Arnold-Chiari malformation.

The beaking deformity of the tectum, referred to in this paper as the mesencephalic spur, is regularly present in the Type II variety of the Arnold-Chiari malformation in varying degrees of severity. When the mesencephalic spur is related to associated myelomeningocele, it was found that the more extensive the myelomeningocele, and the older the affected children, the more prominent was the mesencephalic spur.

Experimental congenital hydrocephalus. A review with special consideration of hydrocephalus produced by zinc deficiency.

A review was made of experimental methods available to produce congenital hydrocephalus by teratogenic methods. Radiation, infections, trypan blue, hypervitaminosis A, salicylates and nutritional deficiencies were considered. In the course of prenatal zinc deficiency experiments, congenital hydrocephalus was frequently encountered and histologic sections were made of many representative specimens. Details of the findings are described, among them various types of aqueduct stenosis or obileration. Although these anomalies suggest that occlusion of the aqueduct is the cause of the enlargement of the ventricular system it was noted that there was also ventricular dilatation caudal to the stenotic point of the aqueduct. Hydrocephalus without aqueductal stenosis has also been observed in experimental animals. It seems possible that some cases of congenital hydrocephalus attributed to aqueductal stenosis are examples of hydrocephalus with secondary block of the aqueduct.
