[Development of the method of magnetic neutron capture therapy of cancer].

The method of magnetic neutron capture therapy (MNTC) of cancer can be described as a combination of two methods: the targeted delivery of drugs using magnetic carriers and the proper neutron capture therapy which consists in tumor irradiation with thermal neutrons following the delivery of 10B compounds to the tumor site. Two-component ultradispersed particles containing Fe and C were tested as magnetic adsorbents of boron phenylalanine and borax. The quantities of absorbed borax proved sufficient for high concentration of boron atoms at the tumor site. The kinetics of boron release to saline substantiates the application of Fe-B (10%) ultradispersed particles for efficient MNTC. Both particle types have high magnetization and magnetic homogeneity, can form stable magnetic suspensions, and have low toxicity.

[The isoenzyme composition of liver pyruvate kinase from hens in ontogeny].

Only one isozyme M2 of pyruvate kinase was found in the liver of hens at all stages of embryonic and postembryonic development. No analogue to isozyme L from the liver of mammals was found. During embryogenesis and postnatal life, isozyme M2 is presented by two forms which differ in pI values. Throughout embryonic and postembryonic development, pyruvate kinase is presented by two forms which differ in their substrate affinity.

[Effect of elevated hydrostatic pressure on the shape of human erythrocytes].

Influence of high hydrostatic pressure (2600-4300 atm) on the shape of human red blood cells was studied. An irreversible change of the shape was observed, which was similar to that seen in the case of a shift stress. The model modification dynamics of the erythrocyte shape was proposed. Activation energy and activation volume of the defects resulting in shape changes were calculated.

Some general principles of tissue crushing and regeneration during sutureless anastomosis of hollow organs of the alimentary tract.

Tissues of the hollow organs of the gastrointestinal tract are crushed in order to create an anastomosis. The processes taking place in the tissues have been inadequately studied. A model of the tissue crushing process is suggested and the results of theory and experiments are compared. Dependence of the rejection time of the crushing influence on the crushing force was demonstrated experimentally. The relationship obtained can be explained on the grounds that migration of cell destruction products from the zone of crushing to the zones of healing stimulates adequate cellular immunologic processes. The views developed in this paper may prove useful for the elaboration of new surgical techniques.

[Magnetic sedimentation of protein molecules].

Usage of pondermotive interaction of protein molecules with heterogenous magnetic field for the studies of their physico-chemical properties is considered. Possibility is shown of creating spatial heterogenous concentration of macromolecules whose value is close to the equilibrium one near the slit edge of the magnetic system. Potentialities of magnetic sedimentation of macromolecules are compared with different variants of centrifugation. It is shown that by means of magnetic sedimentation the data on the shape, volume and molecular weight of the molecules, as well as on the change of these parameters, can be obtained. It is also possible to calculate the distribution parameters of macromolecules according to their magnetic sensitivity and partial volumes and to find correlation between these parameters. Conduction of macromolecule sedimentation in the media with different magnetic sensitivity allows to enlarge the scope of the information obtained.

[Structural study of Eremurus glucomannans by electron microscopic and roentgenographic methods].

By electron microscopy and roentgenography glucomannanes from four species of Eremurus have been examined and shown to be polymorphic. Deacetylated glucomannane produces a lamellar form with a high degree of crystallinity. Partially acetylated glucomannane produces a fibrillar form representing a poorly ordered structure with a spaced (4.4 A) position of chains going in the same direction. In plants glucomannane can also exist as fibrils. The factors determining the formation of a certain supramolecular form are acetyl substitutes in the chain of the polysaccharide and the degree of its polymerization. The effect of the supramolecular structure on the properties and biological function of glucomannanes is discussed.
