[Cellular reaction of the area postrema of the medulla oblongata to experimental alloxan diabetes].

The karyometric method was used to investigate the response of the ependyne nerve and glia-like cells of the rat area postrema (AP) to disorders of carbohydrate metabolism in alloxan diabetes. A significant response of these cells was revealed, which was also confirmed by the changes found in the AP structures in disorders of glucose metabolism. The data obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that the AP structures are implicated in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism as chemoreceptor ones.

[Restriction mapping of genome and nucleotide sequence of Aujeszky's disease virus strains isolated in CIS].

Auesku disease virus--suid herpesvirus type I (SHV-1) genome is analyzed by the restriction fragment pattern analysis. The analyzed strains isolated in CIS countries in 1962-1992 were compared with the European strains. Genomes of field strains Arsk, Turkmenia, and Geneva differed and even lacked the restriction fragments typical of vaccine strains MK-25 or UNIIEV-18S, which agrees with the results of the neutralization test. Immunobiological characteristics of SHV-1 strains are discussed.

[Adenovirus KR95, isolated from chickens during an outbreak of hydropericarditis, is the pathogen of this disease].

Virus agent KR95 was isolated from the liver of dieoff chickens during an outbreak of hydropericarditis syndrome at a poultry farm in Russia. Electron microscopic examination of the virus morphology, comparative restriction cleavage map construction, DNA-DNA hybridization, and analysis of structural proteins from purified and disrupted virions showed that the agent is to be classified as type 1 avian adenovirus.

[Effects of infusion media on human red blood cell morphology].

The effect of various infusion media on the structure of human red blood cells was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro experiments used 10% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, 10% glucose solution, 20% albumin solution, Rheopolyglucin, HyperHAES solution (18 g of NaCl in combination with 60 g of hydroxyethylstarch (HES), 200/0.5), Voluven (HES 130/0.4/9:1), and a combination of hypertensive NaCl solution and Rheopolyglucin. The morphofunctional response of red blood cells was studied in the clinical setting when 6% Voluven solution (HES 130/0.4/ 9:1) and hypertensive NaCl and glucose solutions were used. It was established that 10% NaCl solution caused considerable changes in the morphology of red blood cells both in the experiment and in patients with severe brain injury. The magnitude of structural changes increased as blood NaCl concentrations became higher. 10% glucose solution, Voluven, Rheopolyglucin, and albumin did not virtually affect the structure of red blood cells. Infusion of Voluven (500 ml of 6% solution for 40 minutes) induced no changes in the morphology of red blood cells in the clinical setting. Among the test solutions used to correct intracranial hypertension (HyperHAES, 10% NaCl, a combination of rheopolyglucin and 10% NaCl), HyperHAES exerted the least effect on the morphology of red blood cells.

[Testosterone metabolism in discrete areas of the brain in rat fetuses].

Experiments in vitro with further thin-layer chromatography of steroids were staged to investigate changing of 3H-testosterone into 3H-estradiol-17 beta and 3H-5 alpha-reduced metabolites in a fraction of 1000 g of homogenates of the medial preoptic area (MPA), the paraventricular nuclei (PVN), the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) of the lower cerebral trunk, the rostral and caudal parts of the amygdaloid complex (ACr and ACc) of the brain of 21-day male and female rat fetuses. The activity of aromatase (AA) and 5 alpha-reductase (AR) was detected in all investigated areas. AA was maximum in PVN of females and minimum in ACc of males and females. The production of 5 alpha-dehydrotestosterone prevailed among 5 alpha-reduced products in PVN, DVC and ACr, 5 alpha- and rostane-3 alpha and 17 beta-diol--in MPA and ACr, AR in ACr was much higher than in ACc. AR in DVC of females was slightly higher than in males. Sex differences in the other cerebral areas were undetectable. The results of the investigation suggest that the above cerebral structures are dependent on sex hormones.

[Natural killers and cytotoxic lymphocytes in classical hog cholera].

The formation of immune mechanisms directed at elimination of infected cells and including the activity of natural killers and cytotoxic lymphocytes was assessed in pigs infected with hog cholera virus. In acute disease natural killer activity in the blood is reduced, while in vaccinal process it is increased. Vaccination in parallel with cyclophosphamide immunodepression lead to inhibition of natural killer activity. Leukocytes and lymphocytes of immunized pigs can cause cytolysis of autologous targets infected with hog cholera virus.
